River to Coast

The Year Nine LEAD Program is an innovative and challenging College initiative. LEAD is an acronym for Learning by Experience and Academic Depth. The title reflects admirably the dual aims of melding a hands on experiential approach to learning which is underpinned by rigorous curriculum. Every week a full day is devoted to the LEAD Day Program. Each school term has a different key focus which students address via their involvement in a variety of unique challenges. The four key areas covered in 2008 are:

River to Coast - Why is the Barwon River Important to Geelong?

Sustainability - Just because we can do it, should we?

The World of Work - How do I transform my talents into a rewarding career?

Popular Culture - What is popular culture and how do I retain my individuality.

Students routinely devise their own rich questions to answer and accomplish this via exploration of a combination of excursions, incursions and College based activities. They present outcomes in many modes including oral, written, dramatically or via artistic representations The Program produces students with enhanced ability to problem solve, lead groups, work cooperatively in teams and to take responsibility for their learning.

Notebook Program

Grovedale College has had a successful Notebook Program for over 8 years. Students entering the College choose whether or not they wish to be in a notebook class, in which each student owns their own notebook computer and use these in most classes.

To become involved in the program students and parents purchase a computer through the schools supplier. The model of notebook changes from year to year to keep up with changes in technology. The costs and payment options are covered in depth in a parent information evening towards the end of the year.

For more information about the program or the parent information evening please contact Flynn Hyslop the Notebook Program Coordinator.

Sports Academy

Grovedale College Sports Academy commenced in 2005 with the sports of Football, Netball and Cricket. The Academy now offers Soccer, Basketball and Tennis as well. The Sports Academy is offered to students from year 7 to year 10. The course provides all students with an exciting and challenging program. The program focuses on the development of the whole person in conjunction with their sporting skills and ability. Students are given instruction from College staff as well as specialist consultant coaches.

The selection process for Years Seven and Eight applies each year during the first three weeks of term one when students are involved in a comprehensive selection phase. Selected students are then invited to participate in the Sports Academy program. Students selected in the Academy remain in the squad for the year but can be suspended at any time for not adhering to Academy expectations or Trademark. At the end of each year squad members will graduate if they have reached competencies in all designated areas of the program. There is a formal presentation to all successful Academy students at the end of each year.
